Effect of Trauma in Teens

In teenagers, trauma can affect their:

  • Ability to make sound decisions (knowing when they are in danger and when they are safe).
  • Ability to control their behavior.
  • Thinking about the result of their behavior.
  • Deal with stress.

As a result, they are at increased risk for:

  • Behavior that puts themselves or someone else at risk.
  • School problems.
  • Decreased academic achievement.
  • Poor choices.
  • Aggressive or criminal behaviors.
