Psychotropic medicines are prescribed for the treatment of symptoms of psychosis or another mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder and that is used to exercise an effect on the central nervous system to influence and modify behavior, cognition, or affective state.
In other words, they are medicines used to treat mental or serious behavior disorders.
The term psychotropic medication includes the following categories:
- Psychomotor stimulants.
- Antidepressants
- Antipsychotics or neuroleptics.
- Agents for control of mania or depression.
- Anti-anxiety agents.
- Sedatives, hypnotics, or other sleep-promoting medications.
