Why is Normalcy Important?

Definition

Normalcy means helping children live as normal a life as possible. That includes letting them do activities that a reasonable and prudent parent would find suitable for all children of the same age, level of maturity, and development.

As a child or teen do you remember going to a friend's house, having an after-school job, joining a club, taking a school trip, learning to drive, dating, or going to a prom? Normalcy means letting children and youth have experiences and do activities that are normal for kids of their age and level of development. This helps them grow and develop normally.

Do you remember the young woman in the video who said she wished the foster home she was in as a child had the chili or hot sauce she was used to eating? This may seem like a small thing, yet children in foster care face so many changes that something as small as enjoying a favorite hot sauce can give them comfort and a sense of normalcy.
