Normalcy Matters

Did you know youth in foster care have worse educational, economic, and behavioral outcomes than the general population? Normalcy helps youth experience a range of normal childhood experiences. They become better decision makers when caring adults let them learn from their experiences and mistakes. It can also keep them connected to adults who will support them.

Having a more normal life in foster care can make youth better prepared for adulthood when they leave care. For many children and youth in care, normalcy is participating in extracurricular activities and engaging in everyday activities that are of interest to them. These activities give youth a chance to take responsibility and make better choices. It also helps them:

  • Learn how to work as a team.
  • Build confidence.
  • Meet new people.
  • Build relationships with peers and adults.
  • Explore new interests.
