System-Related Trauma

A system can be a public or private organization, like a foster care agency or a residential treatment center.

System-related trauma happens when the child or youth experiences trauma because of the policies or the way things are handled as they are cared for.

When it is not possible to avoid system-related trauma, it is important to minimize it.

System-related experiences that can create or worsen trauma for children and families include:

  • Removal of children from the home.
  • Multiple placement disruptions.
  • Termination of parental rights.
