What to Do When the Child or Youth Runs Away or Goes Missing

If the child or youth runs away or goes missing, immediately begin informing others and searching for the child or youth. Do the following:

  • Call law enforcement and make a missing child report.
  • Call the child or youth’s caseworker to let them know that the child is missing. If the caseworker is unavailable or it is after hours, call the DFPS hotline at 1-800-252-5400.
  • Contact the school so they understand the situation if the child or youth returns to school.
  • Reach out to parents of the child or youth’s friends to see if they have heard from them.
