VOLUNTEER

Helpline advocates answer calls, texts, and chats concerning at-risk youth and their families in crisis. Volunteers are our most valuable resource.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • 18yrs old or older
  • Live in Austin area
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment
  • Computer use and knowledge.
  • Empathy
  • Listen without judgement.

Our helpline volunteers receive:

  • Specialized training.
  • Valuable experience for those who are considering a career in human services.
  • Flexible hours to fit their schedules.

Job Description

Title:    Volunteer Advocate

Description of Project:  Volunteer Advocates receive calls, chats, and texts and provide crisis intervention, problem solving techniques, and alternative resolutions, as well as, local and national resource referrals outside of the hotline.

Training:  Volunteers receive 20 hours of observation training.  Continued training classes are also available. One full-time staff member will be on-call at all times to provide additional assistance if needed.

Reporting: Volunteers are responsible for minimal digital record keeping and maintaining confidentiality requirements.

Time Commitment:  It is preferable that volunteers schedule a set weekly shift.  Flexible schedules are available.  The initial commitment is a minimum of 20 hours a month beyond the training schedule. Arriving on time to each shift is required.

Qualifications and Special Skills Needed:  Helpline staff seeks mature individuals possessing the ability to relate to others in a warm, empathetic, and friendly manner.  Telephone volunteers must be willing to accept supervision and implement the supervisor’s recommendations.  Good communication skills are crucial.  It is expected that the telephone volunteers be prompt and consistent regarding their scheduled hours.  Telephone volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
