What Can We Do? (continued)

Dealing with Difficult Behaviors

If the child or youth has behaviors that are difficult to deal with, try to view those behaviors through a trauma-informed lens.

For example, with compassion, ask questions like:

  • What is really going on behind the behavior?
  • What is the child, youth, or family feeling?
  • Why is the child, youth, or family feeling nervous?
  • Why is the child, youth, or family feeling sad?
  • Why is the child, youth, or family feeling scared?
  • Does the child or youth need food, rest, or exercise?
