Placement Runaway Prevention Meeting: Honesty and Support

  • Be open and honest about the child or youth’s case and what is happening. Withholding case information from the child or youth can cause their behaviors to escalate quickly.
  • Help the child or youth to understand the reason for case updates and changes that upset them.
  • If necessary, involve a therapist or a person close to the child in these conversations.
  • When appropriate, the caseworker might visit or call the child more often to help them strengthen their connections to the people important to them.

Helpful tip: The caseworker could set up regular phone, video, or other virtual contact with the child or youth if they are unable to meet in person.
