DFPS Commissioner Stephanie Muth Announces Departure
Stephanie Muth, who has led the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) through transformative improvements since January 2023, today announced she is stepping down effective July 31, 2025.
“Commissioner Muth has led with unwavering dedication and service to the children and families of Texas,” Governor Abbott said. “Under her guidance, the Department of Family and Protective Services made meaningful progress to improve care for our state’s most vulnerable children. Her commitment to expand innovative community-based solutions will leave a lasting impact on the state of Texas.”
Commissioner Muth, an experienced public administrator and organizational leader, took the helm in 2023 when the agency was experiencing record high turnover and challenges with youth without placement sleeping in hotel rooms across the state. Commissioner Muth has led efforts to improve outcomes for vulnerable Texans and enhance agency operations, including reducing turnover, improving placement and treatment options for youth with significant behavioral health needs, overseeing the transformation of the foster care rate system to improve outcomes for children and expanding Community Based Care.
“I have the highest regard for the agency’s leadership and staff and am enormously proud of the work we’ve done together. I’ve accomplished many of the goals the Governor set for my time at DFPS and I am confident that the agency will continue to make progress,” said Muth. “I’m grateful to Governor Abbott for entrusting me to serve children, families and vulnerable adults in Texas.”
