Application Steps
Please note that the Summer 2026 Internship Application Period will be open from March 16th through April 26th and the Fall 2026 Application Period will be open April 20th – July 3rd. Positions fill quickly, so you are encouraged to apply early in the application period. To apply for an internship with DFPS, please follow the steps below:
- To get started, visit Handshake to see current opportunities.
- If you don’t already have an account with Handshake you can make one using an .edu email address.
- Go to the Jobs tab on the Texas DFPS page and look for any positions with the “Internship” title that meet your criteria
- The posting will clearly state if the internship is paid or unpaid. You will need to submit a resume and letter of Interest with your application.
- You can also look for internships through the general search bar by searching “Texas Department of Family and Protective Services”
- Once searched for, you can then filter all results by location, position type, paid/unpaid, etc.
- Staff will review your information and will contact you if they are interested in setting up an interview. All interns must be interviewed either virtually or in-person.
- Selected candidates will be sent paperwork to complete and sign electronically.
- Once the completed paperwork is returned, staff will submit the required background checks.
- Upon clearing the required background checks, the student will be connected to their supervisor to set their start date and schedule required trainings. Trainings vary based on the program area and type of internship.
If you are not able to create an account with Handshake and are interested in an internship with DFPS please complete the Internship Interest Form. Only complete this form if you cannot create a Handshake account.
